Baidu's AI Chatbot 'Ernie Bot' surpasses 200 Million users, doubling in size as China accelerates AI approvals
Baidus AI chatbot, “Ernie Bot”, has seen its user base surge to over 200 million, doubling since December. The chatbot’s API is used over 200 million times daily, and its enterprise clientele has grown to 85,000. Baidu has started monetizing Ernie, earning several hundred million yuan last quarter by enhancing its advertising services and assisting other firms with AI.
Ernie Bot, the first ChatGPT-like chatbot developed in China, was publicly released in August after receiving government approval. Domestic AI services, particularly the “Kimi” chatbot from Alibaba-backed start-up Moonshot AI, are quickly catching up with Ernie Bot. However, globally, Chinese generative AI services still lag behind their Western counterparts, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT remaining the most popular.
China has recently accelerated approvals for AI services, highlighting AI as a key tech sector where it aims to compete with the U.S. So far, 117 large AI models have been approved.
