OpenAI's ChatGPT services hit by series of DDoS attacks, raising concerns among security experts

OpenAI has confirmed that its ChatGPT services experienced intermittent outages due to distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, raising concerns among security researchers. These disruptions, occurring on November 8, sparked worries about workflow interruptions for companies relying on ChatGPT for coding and the potential for threat actors to launch targeted attacks on customer networks.

The recent outage follows a series of incidents, including a ChatGPT API outage on Wednesday, partial ChatGPT outages on Tuesday, and elevated error rates on the text-to-image model Dall-E on Monday. Security experts express concerns about the impact on developers, who rely on ChatGPT for code completion, debugging, and learning, leading to potential project delays and decreased productivity.

Callie Guenther, Senior Manager at Critical Start, highlights the challenges for developers and suggests that the downtime may prompt a reevaluation of dependencies and exploration of alternative options. Patrick "Pat" Arvidson from Interpres Security emphasizes the severity of the DDoS attack, suggesting that sophisticated hackers may use such incidents as distractions for more significant long-term plans, including infiltrating targeted networks.

While OpenAI has not attributed the DDoS attacks, Anonymous Sudan, a suspected Russian threat actor, claimed responsibility, citing OpenAI's alleged sympathies with Israel. The threat group accuses OpenAI of cooperating with the "occupation state of Israel" and criticizes the CEO's willingness to invest in Israel. Security experts caution that attributing cyberattacks is complex, citing potential reasons for OpenAI's lack of attribution, such as insufficient evidence or a strategic decision to avoid giving attention to the attackers.

Guenther emphasizes the difficulty of attribution in cybersecurity, acknowledging that attackers often conceal their identities, and the possibility that the claim by Anonymous Sudan could be a publicity stunt.
